Economic Development:
New Haven is preparing for unprecedented downtown development despite the current recession. Katie believes that this development must occur responsibly by actively including community input solicited throughout the development process. Responsible economic development will increase the city’s tax base, create jobs and provide increased revenue for city services, improving the city’s ability to address many other issues. Though Mike and Minh both recognize the central importance of development, neither has proposed a process-based solution for how it can be improved. Mike presents a vague vision of what development should look like without explaining how it can be achieved while Minh proposes a minor bureaucratic change that would reassign someone in the city to coordinate small business.
Safe Streets:
Safe Streets has already galvanized support from throughout the city, and the Board of Aldermen is currently in the process of implementing... Read more »
Katie was endorsed by Alderman Jorge Perez (Ward 5) and Alderwoman Jackie James (Ward 3) in an op-ed published in today’s YDN. They are longtime aldermen from the Hill, and they are also the chair and vice-chair of the Black and Hispanic Caucus of the Board of Aldermen, the largest caucus on the Board.
From the op-ed:
The desperate times our constituents in the Hill — and communities of color across the city — are facing require strong leaders on the Board who will rise to meet the challenges we face in this moment of economic crisis.
Only one candidate in the Ward 1 race stands out to us as that kind of leader: Katie Harrison ’11.

Check out the op-ed written by Eliza Schafler (former co-coordinator of YHHAP) and Efan Wu (current co-coordinator of YHHAP and former local director of National Student Partnerships) on this issue of homelessness.
Because of her experience with homelessness issues through NSP and her focus on broad city issues, we believe Katie is the Ward 1 aldermanic candidate who will fight homelessness most effectively. She will work with well-informed and active Yale students, as well as New Haven leaders and residents, to continue her education on these complex issues. She understands that this is a fight on multiple fronts, such as prison re-entry, health care, housing, education and economic development. She has voiced her support for a much-needed regional solution. Most importantly, she will use her unique position to see the big picture and think creatively.

According to a YDN poll, Katie is ahead in the polls! Check it out!
In an Internet poll conducted by the News last weekend, 40 percent of respondents who said they are planning to cast a ballot in the Ward 1 endorsement race next week said they have yet to pick a candidate. On April 2, I attended the fourth of what was intended to be a series of three community workshops held by city officials and The Cecil Group on the Route 34 Municipal Development Plan. The city chose to add a fourth meeting based on overwhelming disapproval from those in attendance at the previous meeting last month. Though the community members were more favorable towards the plan’s latest iteration, they took the opportunity to voice concern over the city’s current process for soliciting community input. A two page letter presented from “Concerned New Haven Citizens” stated:
We recognize the tremendous amount of time and energy that has gone into the development... Read more »
